How to Eat for Health and Weight Loss

Wondering what and how to eat for health and weight loss? Confused by all of the info available that seems to be contradictory? Fed up with juicing / paleo / gluten-free / insert-extreme-diet-plan-here?

OK, let me break it down for you. It's not complicated, friends.

1. Eat close to nature (the fewer labels or ingredients the better!)

2. Buy local and know how it was raised/grown/treated whenever possible.

3. Eat a reasonable amount of good stuff (portion control!) and find something active to do that you don't hate.

4. 80% of the time, make healthy choices and the other 20% of the time don't sweat it. Over time you will find that even your 20% choices will be healthier because they taste good AND make you feel good!

Healthy Holiday Tips!

This it the time of year people tend to stall out/give up in their efforts to be healthy and fit.  Don’t let it happen to you! Let this year be the one time you don’t have to make that same old Resolution…you can head into 2015 with great habits and a healthy mindset.  Here are 10 quick tips for making it happen.

1. Exercise – do it. Seriously. Now more than ever.

2. Eat small meals with protein throughout the day. Don’t skip breakfast on holidays.

no, seriously. eat breakfast

3. Don’t be too hard on yourself. If you slip up, don’t figure you might as well just go crazy and eat everything in sight. Course correct and do better at the next opportunity (meal, workout, etc.)

4. Sleep and Relax – do it. Seriously. Now more than ever.

5. Wear fitted clothing and carry props. You tend to eat less when you don’t have an expandable waistband and when you have something occupying your hands.

This seems a bit extreme.

6. Water – drink it. Half your body weight in ounces every day.

7. Visualize yourself how you want to look and feel in January or at an event you have scheduled early next year.

8. Be the host and/or bring healthy dishes when you’re a guest. Give food based gifts away. Bake less – no one NEEDS you to make 17 different kinds of cookies.

9. Plan ahead – schedule workouts in advance. Keep convenient snack foods on hand and bring them with you when you’re travelling. If you’ll be out of town, scout out healthy restaurants and active things to do. You can even bring Beachbody workouts with you and do them on your laptop!

10. Prioritize – sometimes putting your health first means saying, “no” to invitations. Choose your splurge at each event and enjoy every bite, but make sure everything else you eat/drink will help you reach your goals.

BONUS!
Be accountable. Don’t just write it down after you eat it, but find someone who will give you tough love and commit to faxing them a picture of everything BEFORE you eat it and getting their “permission” to consume it. Get a workout buddy, too.

If you need help with accountability, that’s what I do as a Beachbody coach. Please reach out if I can be of service.

Top 8 Things to Know About Shakeology

Many customers and potential customers ask what Shakeology is actually supposed to do for them. While each person's body is unique and different, here are some short summaries of effects that anyone taking Shakeology on a regular basis may experience.

number1Antioxidants. Shakeology contains some of the most potent antioxidants: flavonoids and phytonutrients such as spinach, blue green algae, carrot powder, strawberry powder, and vitamins E and C. These help to prevent free radicals from oxidizing and destroying cells. The ingredients in our antioxidant blend such as pomegranate, acai berry, camu-camu, goji, and blueberry also have powerful antioxidant effects to support your immune system and help protect your body from normal inflammatory response.*

number 2Energy. Shakeology contains a range of B vitamins and trace minerals, like zinc and magnesium, from whole food sources that regulate metabolism and increase energy. Shakeology also contains maca root, an adaptogen herb known to promote endurance and stamina.*

number 3Digestion. The Shakeology non-dairy prebiotic and probiotic blend contains fiber and different enzymes like amylase, papain, cellulose, and lactase, which all support digestion. These ingredients aid in breaking down food molecules into smaller molecules that can be properly digested, so all of the nutrients can be absorbed into your system.*

number 4Mood. One scoop of Shakeology provides 100% of the daily recommended intake of vitamin B12. B12 is often linked with good mood maintenance; B vitamins are also essential for the production and proper functioning of neurotransmitters like dopamine, crucial to the experience of pleasure. Shakeology also contains cacao, which is very high in phenylethylamine (PEA). PEA acts as a neuromodulator to enhance one's mood.*

number 5Detoxification. Many of the ingredients in Shakeology (spirulina, chlorella, flaxseed, barley grass, spinach) contain powerful detoxification compounds such as chlorophyll and alpha-linolenic acid. These ingredients may help rid the body of environmental toxins such as smog, heavy metals, herbicides, cleaning products, and pesticides. They also aid in liver detoxification. Shakeology also includes kamut grass, an ingredient coined "nature's most powerful detoxifier." This grass has been known to cleanse the body and detoxify the cells to restore health and vitality.*

number 6Immunity. The antioxidants, bioflavanoids, and flavanoids in Shakeology work to support immunity. Some of these ingredients include ashwaganda, acerola cherry, rose hips, and goji berries. The goji berries in Shakeology are one of the richest sources of antioxidants; not only does goji berry promote eye, reproductive, and circulatory health, but it also supports your immune system and promotes longevity!*

number 7Satiety/cravings. The protein, chromium, and nutrient-dense calories from superfoods in Shakeology work to help decrease your appetite. Chromium is important because it helps maintain blood-sugar levels, which reduces sugar cravings and promotes fat metabolism. Plus, protein-rich meals are a great way to keep you feeling full, longer!*

number 8Complete nutrition: Each Shakeology ingredient plays an important role in feeding your body on a cellular level, but it is important to remember that the synergy of the 70+ ingredients working together is what truly fuels your body to keep you looking and feeling your best.*

So there you have it! That's a snapshot of all the wonderful things Shakeology does for your body. For more information or to order, please visit www.ShakeCoach.com.

If you already drink Shakeology, what is your favorite benefit?  If you don't drink Shakeology, which benefit sounds the most useful to you?

Stop Nighttime Snacking!

One of the most frequent issues people have when they are on their journey toward reaching a goal weight and being healthier is nighttime snacking.  After dinner is when many of us start to relax and unwind after a long day and many times, we reach for snack foods or dessert as we "chill out" on the couch.  We may tell ourselves we deserve it or we're still hungry or even than it's not a big deal because we had a healthy dinner, but the truth is, nighttime snacking is a habit.  And not a good one.  Often, addressing this one thing can lead to a much faster path toward optimal wellness.

That all being said, changing a habit is easier said than done.  Not to worry; I'm here to help!  Here are 5 tips for cutting out evening munching once and for all:

1.  Set a time that the kitchen is closed and then STAY OUT OF THE KITCHEN. No fudging even by a minute.  That's a slippery slope, my friend.

2.  Brush your teeth and use mouthwash at your designated “stop eating” time. Salty snack foods just don't sound as good when your mouth is minty fresh.

3.  Tell everyone else in your house that they have permission to “insert something you find painful here.” This punishment could be to take your phone away for a day, require you to pay them $50 (make sure this dollar amount is high enough that you are going to be really unhappy if you have to pay it), post that really embarrassing picture of you on Facebook, etc.  It has to be something that will really make you think not only once but twice about eating!

4.  Find an accountability buddy and agree that you will text a picture of whatever you intend to eat BEFORE you eat it. Your buddy has to text you back with approval before you can dig in.

5.  When all else fails, and you’re ready to give in to temptations that will sabotage your goals, here is the ultimate secret weapon strategy: put on your skimpiest bathing suit right after dinner. Wear it until you go to bed.  No cover up.
