13 Signs of Overtraining

athlete-body-exercise-4077

In fitness, more is not always better.  Many of us think that if we work out twice as long, or twice as hard, we will get twice the results…or more! While trainers, coaches, and even our friends might think they're being helpful when they push us to keep going or push harder, there comes a time when it's no longer helpful and in fact, it can be harmful. Read on for 13 signs you may be overtraining and 8 ways to treat or even prevent it.

Signs and Symptoms:

1. Persistent heavy, stiff, and sore muscles (1-3 days after a new workout is normal…continuously sore muscles for a week or more is not)

2. Persistent fatigue, washed-out feeling

3. Decreased performance and ability to maintain the training regimen (you can't lift as much weight or workout as long as you did in weeks past)

allergy-18656_1280

4. Increased susceptiblity to infections, colds, and headaches

5. Nagging and somewhat chronic injuries

6. Sleep disturbances

7. Decreased mental concentration and restlessness

8. Increased irritability

9. Depression

10. Tachycardia and, in some cases, bradycardia (rapid or slow heart rate)

11. Loss of appetite and weight loss

12. Bowel movement changes

13. Absence of menstruation

What many of these symptoms have in common is they are signs that your body isn't functioning at its highest capacity.  It is overburdened, is the case of overtraining, by trying to help your muscles recover and the resources just aren't available to make it happen to the extent necessary.

I actually experienced overtraining once a few years ago. I was doing a high intensity cardio program and feeling really good after the first round.  The second round called for almost doubling the length of the workout time and by about 10 days in, I felt exhausted, irritable, and had lost my appetite.  I took a few days off of exercise completely and then went back to round one and stuck with it for most of my workouts, slowly introducing the level 2 workouts once a week.

Here are 8 ways to treat or even prevent overtraining from occuring:

shoes-291845_12801. Listen to your body and take extra recovery time as needed (needed is the key word – sometimes it is hard to distinguish between want and need!)

2. Follow the 10% rule; don't increase training volume and/or intensity by more than 10% at a time (here is the rule that I broke)

3. Follow a periodization format: intersperse periods of intense/high-volume training with extended periods of rest/recovery and/or cross-training.

4. Recovery/rest between intense workouts is critical because this is when muscle repair and growth occur; usually 24 to 72 hours depending on the intensity and volume of the session.

5. You shouldn't feel completely wiped out at the end of a hard workout; you should feel like you could do more.  If not, you are doing too much.

6. Proper nutrition and hydration are extremely important; consulting a sports nutritionist may be helpful.

7. Quality sleep is ESSENTIAL.  I can't stress this one enough.  When you're sleeping is when your body rests, heals, and grows.  DON'T SKIMP on sleep.

8. Variety in your training is healthy; don't do the same thing all the time

If you don't already keep a log or have some other way of tracking your workouts, I suggest you start now.  This will allow you to pinpoint any potential issues before they become problems OR go back and determine what caused a problem if one occurs. Keep track of your workout duration, type, intensity, soreness/pain, resting heart rate, changes in body weight, hours of sleep, and water intake in addition to keeping a food log.  Overtime you will learn what works…and what doesn't work…for your body.

What is a Beachbody Coach?

Some people have jobs that are very easy to understand.  I'm a plumber. I'm a doctor. I'm a teacher. I'm a car salesman.  We pretty much know what people in those jobs do.  However, when I introduce myself and someone asks me what I do, I have found that answering, "I am a Beachbody Coach," is an answer often met with a blank stare.

blank stare

It gets slightly better reception when I simply say, "I am a fitness coach."  People generally have an idea what I do at that point, but honestly…they're usually very wrong.

You see, as a Beachbody coach, I am not a personal trainer.  I don't work at a gym and I don't come to your house and tell you what to do to get fit or lose weight. I don't teach exercise classes. I am not a physical therapist.

i am a beachbody coach

Now that you know what I'm NOT, let me explain what being a Beachbody coach is all about…and why you probably need one.

A Beachbody coach is really a support and accountability partner.  Most of us know what we SHOULD be doing…eating less junk food, eating more veggies, getting more exercise, etc.  But, most of us don't do it for more than a day or two in a row before we get off track. Again. My role is to actually hold you accountable to what you said you were going to do – even after you've lost the motivation you had when you said you were going to do it.  I am here to remind you WHY you made the decision to change your ways and to support you in sticking to your decision and your committment so you can succeed.

I don't have all the answers and I can't force you to do anything, but I can provide you with support and even tough love to take care of yourself and live your best life.

what is a coach

That's a high level overview of what being a Beachbody coach is all about. Now, let's get practical. Here is what I literally DO on a daily basis with customers and potential customers.

1.  Help you choose the right program and/or product for you to do in the comfort of your own home on YOUR schedule. I take into account your limitations, challenges, preferences, struggles, and of course, your goals.  Beachbody has dozens of programs to offer, including extreme/intense workouts such as Insanity and P90X as well as low or no-impact programs such as Tai Cheng and PiYo.  We have a program with a strong nutritional component to help you tackle your portion control issues (21 Day Fix) and we have bodybuilding program (Body Beast). We  have programs that are similar to group exercise classes at the gym (e.g., TurboFire) and many more.  We even have a 21 Day Reset that is focused entirely on whole food nutrition to give your body a complete tune up without exercise. They all work. They are all effective. The key is to choose the right one.

Then we move on to the OTHER thing I do as a Beachbody coach…

2. I hold you accountable to your chosen program/product.  I mainly do this through Challenge Groups hosted on Facebook. My team and I put together private groups of people who are starting a workout program on the same day – sometimes everyone does the same program; sometimes people are doing different programs – and then we post daily and ask the group members to do the same.  As coaches, we post motivational items, information, and tips/tools.  We ask group members to post when they've completed their workouts, what their meals were like, and even what challenges and/or successes they had.  We encourage lots of photos and interaction to keep the group interactive and inspirational.  If someone is not on Facebook and/or does not like the group dynamic, we can make other arrangements, but most people find they really love the Challenge Groups and think it's worth it to get on Facebook even if it's strictly for the purposes of checking in each day.

So – ask me again.

You: "Kristen, what do you do?"

Me: "I am a support and accountability coach with Team Beachbody.  I help you find the right program for you and then hold you accountable to sticking to it as you work on reaching your fitness and health goals while saving time and money by working out at home."

You: "That sounds amazing! What do you charge for your coaching?"

Me: "That's the best part! Once you order your program/product, you get a free coach (that's me) and you have access to me forever! There is no charge for what I do. Beachbody wants you to succeed and so do I."

inspiration

So…what are you waiting for!?!? If you don't have a Beachbody coach, sign up now for your free account…and I'll be in touch!

Healthy Holiday Tips!

This it the time of year people tend to stall out/give up in their efforts to be healthy and fit.  Don’t let it happen to you! Let this year be the one time you don’t have to make that same old Resolution…you can head into 2015 with great habits and a healthy mindset.  Here are 10 quick tips for making it happen.

1. Exercise – do it. Seriously. Now more than ever.

2. Eat small meals with protein throughout the day. Don’t skip breakfast on holidays.

no, seriously. eat breakfast

3. Don’t be too hard on yourself. If you slip up, don’t figure you might as well just go crazy and eat everything in sight. Course correct and do better at the next opportunity (meal, workout, etc.)

4. Sleep and Relax – do it. Seriously. Now more than ever.

5. Wear fitted clothing and carry props. You tend to eat less when you don’t have an expandable waistband and when you have something occupying your hands.

belly binding

This seems a bit extreme.

6. Water – drink it. Half your body weight in ounces every day.

7. Visualize yourself how you want to look and feel in January or at an event you have scheduled early next year.

8. Be the host and/or bring healthy dishes when you’re a guest. Give food based gifts away. Bake less – no one NEEDS you to make 17 different kinds of cookies.

9. Plan ahead – schedule workouts in advance. Keep convenient snack foods on hand and bring them with you when you’re travelling. If you’ll be out of town, scout out healthy restaurants and active things to do. You can even bring Beachbody workouts with you and do them on your laptop!

workout on laptop

10. Prioritize – sometimes putting your health first means saying, “no” to invitations. Choose your splurge at each event and enjoy every bite, but make sure everything else you eat/drink will help you reach your goals.

BONUS!
Be accountable. Don’t just write it down after you eat it, but find someone who will give you tough love and commit to faxing them a picture of everything BEFORE you eat it and getting their “permission” to consume it. Get a workout buddy, too.

If you need help with accountability, that’s what I do as a Beachbody coach. Please reach out if I can be of service.

What in the World is a Challenge Group?

If you're friends with me or "like" my page on Facebook, follow me on Twitter, or have ever talked to me about what I do, you've probably heard/seen me mention something about a Challenge Group. And if any of the above are not true of you, please take a moment to rectify that situation with a friend request, like, or follow 🙂

social media options

OK.  Back to the topic at hand.  What is a Challenge Group?  The simple explanation is that it is a support and accountability group housed on Facebook.  I create a group based around a certain Beachbody program, a specific start date, or some other common theme, and add people to the group who want to be part of a supportive community of like-minded people.

bb-challenge-group-training1

What does being in a Challenge Group mean for you, the participant? It means that you agree to some basic requirements.

First, you agree to check in more days than not throughout the length of the group (preferably every day, but sometimes life happens).  Some groups are as short as 5 days…some are up to 90 days and beyond. When you check in, you share what workout you did and/or how you did with your eating and/or if you drank your Shakeology, etc.

I also LOVE LOVE LOVE it when people post pictures in Challenge Groups.  While others may make fun of you for posting sweaty post-workout pictures or those shots you take of every meal you eat, your fellow Challenge Group members want to see them.  All of them.

You agree to generally keep things positive and motivating, but you are encouraged to share your struggles and frustrations so that we can help.  There will be days when you need the group…and some days someone else in the group will need you. The groups are either closed or private so you are in a safe place with people who understand and care.

You agree to ask for help when you need it and offer to help when you can.

You also agree to track your progress with before/after pictures and measurements (which you can submit to Beachbody for a free t-shirt and some possible cash!)

Beachbody-Challenge

So now you may be wondering what I, your coach, does as part of a Challenge Group.  Well, I, too, agree to some basics.

First, I will post at least once a day.  My post will be something that provides motivation, information, and/or inspiration to the group.

I will check in at least once or twice a day to see your posts, add comments, and answer your questions.

I will call you out when you go missing for a while (in a tough-love sort of way!) and

I will appreciate you when you are there for other members of the group.
